To learn to read Tarot cards one must begin by studying
Tarot symbols.
There are many defined tarot card reading instructions but as a novice I found it difficult to understand different artists' interpretations.
To learn how to read Tarot cards, I suggest the A. E. Waite Tarot Deck; as the pictures convey much of the numerology sequence and element truth. The basic symbolism within this deck,if studied correctly will enable you to use any set of Tarot cards by retaining the original meaning of the symbols. Enjoy the grander, elaborate decks when you can read the cards without getting lost in the pictures and confused with the interpretations. The Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack
When learning to read Tarot cards I discovered the Tarot acts as a mirror. It is a powerful tool for guidance and spiritual support. It enables one to see many levels from an objective viewpoint in references many can understand. Tarot readings do not predict the future as your free will and chance of opportunity is always available. It does however "divine" the spiritual and emotional energies around us.
The meanings and interpretations are based on numerology, the elements; spiritual, emotional, mental and physical processes and of course the drawing and placement of the cards. The consistency of the Tarot card meanings over millennium offers us a spiritual framework which we can use as a guide when traveling into our unconsciousness. This is the key in learning to read Tarot cards. The archetypes and meanings of Tarot cards are ancient, universal and timeless. The Tarot is a key in unlocking our spiritual aspirations that we can then manifest on Earth.
The Gilded Tarot
What relevance does the Tarot have today? The meanings and interpretations are based on numerology, the elements; spiritual, emotional, mental and physical processes and of course the drawing and placement of the cards. The elements or suits within the tarot still exist in modern playing cards. The pips of diamonds, spades, clubs and hearts can be expressed as earth, air, fire and water. To bring it into our modern worlds, money, mind, intent and emotion. The meanings of Tarot cards
is universally consistent and lends credibility to this ancient oracle. The soul lives in images. The soul nourishes itself on images. A picture speaks a thousand words. Learning how to read Tarot cards gives you a map of the soul and a structure of the Universe. The cards depict the levels of human consciousness, the first awakening, up to divine All-consciousness, to union with Spirit. The tarot comprises seventy-eight cards. Of these 56 are the lesser or minor trumps, keys or arcana.
The number 56 has significant meaning in Oriental philosophy. When Buddha was born, he took seven steps forwards and backwards in the four directions. 14 x 4 = 56. This also signified the 14 waxing and waning days of the moon and the lunar weeks, like the 14 steps on the heavenly ladder of Osiris and the 14 cards of each suite. The 22 Major, Trump or Greater arcana cards represent the consciousness principles. The whole universe can be seen as formed by this same consciousness and creative powers. A book from the 4th century; attributed to Iamblichus; describes how the initiate of the Osirian mysteries was led through a long gallery which contained 22 pictures, eleven on each side. These may have been the original Tarot trumps.
The Major Arcarna The Mountebank (now Magician or Juggler) The Empress The Emperor The Papess (now Priestess) The Pope (now Hieroglyph) Temperance Love (now the Lovers) The Triumphal car (now the Chariot) Strength The Wheel of Fortune The Hunchback (now the Hermit) The Hanged Man Death The Devil The Arrow (now the Tower) The Star The Moon The Sun The Angel (now Judgment) Justice The World The Fool
List of the Trumps cards; also known as Major or Greater Arcana, as given by a Franciscan friar around 1500 ad.
In order to understand these cards we must remember that all spiritual elements of a person derive from a single source in which everything is in unity. From the source, all energies are manifested in a step by step development to the complete unfolding. It can be compared to the development of a plant from a seed, through various stages of development, from the cotyledon, bud and flower, to the supreme achievement of fruit, containing the seed, thus continuing the cycle once again. The journey of the Ace of any suit through to the King is the fourteen steps of the initiate. This is mirrored on a higher level in the Major Arcana. One is continually climbing and learning of the heights of God/dess consciousness........Elisabeth Haich
